Call for Artists to Restore Mural

San Pedro City Ballet has received support from Arts United San Pedro to restore the iconic Misty Copeland mural at 1231 South Pacific Avenue in San Pedro. The original mural, painted in 2015 by artist KFish, has undergone excessive wear and needs to be refurbished.

Misty Copeland, who grew up in San Pedro and trained at San Pedro City Ballet, was the first African-American female Principal dancer at the prestigious American Ballet Theatre in New York. Upon San Pedro’s dedication of the intersection where this mural stands as Misty Copeland Square, Copeland said, “San Pedro was the only place I ever think of as home… I always give credit to this incredible, small, warm community that made me the person that I am today.”

Professional artists and arts organizations are invited to submit their resumes and qualifications applying to lead the project of restoring the mural. You must demonstrate your ability to conceive, execute and paint a large-scale mural. You must include a rendering of the mural with any proposed changes to the artistic interpretation of the mural.
